Urban Challenge Grants 1.0

Beginning in 2019, the School of Cities sponsored eight Urban Challenge Grants across four overarching themes: Science of Cities, Cities by Design, Cities of Opportunity, and Urban Sustainability. Grants consisted of two stages, a seminar series followed by a small research project (many of which are still ongoing). Faculty members from across the three campuses in Biology, Civil and Mining Engineering, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Economics, Geography and Planning, Historical and Cultural Studies, Landscape Architecture, Mathematics, Physics, Physical and Environmental Sciences, Public Health, and Sociology have participated in the program. Research projects have also engaged community groups and public agencies such as the City of Toronto, the Toronto Environmental Alliance, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Research products include white papers, journal articles, blog posts, and seminar videos.
