How do we design a building? A city block? A neighbourhood? A city?
Today, the task of designing cities and urban spaces is conducted across multiple perspectives including urban planning, architecture, transportation, and infrastructure design and planning. Professionals in these fields often operate in their own spheres, making decisions independently, often leading to the need for further consultation and redesign.
What would a theory of integrative design look like? What other perspectives are needed for design, such as health, recreation, education?
The School of Cities research teams will explore the space of design alternatives at the block, community and city levels.
With support from Tata Trusts, one of India's largest charitable organizations, the School of Cities Alliance in India is a network of Canadian and Indian researchers who will work together to address the country's most pressing urban issues.
