School of Cities interim director Matti Siemiatycki, an associate professor of geography and planning, comments in the Toronto Star about Barcelona's use of Decidim, a free, online platform that is open-source and intended to increase citizen participation.

“Here in Toronto we’ve been doing citizen involvement and citizen engagement in planning decisions, the Official Plan and individual site developments for a long time. The big question is how do you engage a broad and representative constituency? What you find when you attend these meetings regularly is you tend to see familiar faces — a small but committed group that continues to come to the meetings,” he says.
